Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners humbled Barbados Pride by seven wickets in their Zone B match of the Regional Super50 at the Three Ws Oval today. Chasing a total of 175 to win the match, the Marooners raced to their target in 31.3 overs.
They were powered home by Man of the Match Carlos Brathwaite who smashed 50 not out, inclusive of 3 fours and 3 sixes in 31 balls and taking just 48 minutes. Brathwaite was supported by openers Kyle Corbin (40) and Kjorn Ottley (42) who posted 70 for the first wicket and Jonathan Drakes 40 not out.
Unlike the Pride’s batsman, the CCC set the Three Ws Oval ablaze with several attacking strokes that raced to all parts of the field. Their batsmen made a mockery of the target and at times it appeared as though Barbados Pride batted on a different pitch. Off-spinner Ashley was the best bowler for the Pride with 2 for 43 from 7.3 overs.
Earlier Barbados Pride scored 174 from 49.2 overs after the Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners won the toss and sent them in to bat on a slow pitch.
Opener Shayne Mosely top scored with 49 with three boundaries before he was bowled by Carlos Brathwaite trying to whip a ball from the medium pacer. He was supported by all-rounder Kevin Stoute who contributed 36 from 73 balls, before he was well caught low down at long-on by Yannick Ottley off left-arm spinner Linton Buchanan.
The Pride got off to a bad start losing their first wicket in the seventh over when opener Leniko Boucher was run out for two with the score on 13. He was replaced by captain Sharmarh Brooks who was trapped lbw the next ball by Brathwaite.
Jonathan Carter’s struggles with the bat continued. The veteran played at a ball from fast bowler Akeem Jordan that moved off the seam and he edged a catch to wicketkeeper Amir Jangoo. His dismissal left the Pride struggling at 40 for three.
Justin Greaves’ poor form with the bat in this tournament continued when he made seven before he played back to left-arm spinner Yannick Ottley and was struck plumb in the wicket to leave the Pride in dire trouble at 55 for four.
As a result of losing so many wickets early in their innings, the Pride batsmen were forced to struggle throughout their innings. They laboured over their innings and at the end of the 25th over they had mustered a meagre 72 runs with four batsmen already out.
The lower order batsmen Shamar Springer (22), Miguel Cummins (20) and Sulieman Benn (15) added vital runs in the lower-order. Cummins’ innings was a cameo, as he belted three sixes off Keron Cottoy but the legspinner had the last laugh with a stunning caught and bowled catch.
Brathwaite with three wickets for 21 runs was the leading bowler the CCC, and he was ably supported by his fellow pacer Jordan with 3 wickets for 36 runs.
