Jamaica Boosts Cop Presence

December 10, 2009

CaribWorldNews, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Thurs. Dec. 10, 2009: More Jamaican cops will be out in force this holiday season as the island`s murder rate approaches a whopping 1,600.

Assistant Police Chief Glenmore Hinds says more than 700 police officers will be deployed to high-crime areas where they will patrol malls, bus stations and other busy spots throughout the 14 parishes.

Most are recent academy graduates as the police force steps up a new anti-gang initiative to try to rein in the skyrocketing murder rate. The announcement comes a day after the country’s Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, met with two rival deejays – Vybz Kartel and Movado -  to try to curb violence from the two representative sides of Gaza and the Gully.

Jamaica currently has one of the world`s highest murder rates.
